NJ Proposal Photographer | Surprise Proposal Photography in New Jersey
Marriage Proposal Photography
You've got the ring. You have the beginning of a plan. Now you need someone who can disappear into the background until the exact right second, and then deliver photos that look like they belong somewhere framed on a wall.
Electric Love Studios specializes in surprise proposal photography throughout New Jersey. I've photographed proposals in parks, sculpture gardens, rooftop restaurants, downtown streets, historic estates, and backyard setups so carefully lit you'd never know it wasn't a professional set. I cover all of it — Morris County, Essex County, Monmouth County, Hudson County, and beyond.
This isn't someone hiding in a bush with a 200mm lens hoping for the best. I come in as part of the scene: a friend, a staff member, a bystander, basically whoever the story needs us to be. I coordinate with venue managers, work around your timeline, and make sure that when you get down on one knee (or don't — I've photographed plenty of standing proposals too), every frame counts.
I also bring professional lighting. That's not standard practice for proposal photographers; most shoot available light only, which means photos that look like what they are: someone hiding nearby with a camera. Your images look like a portrait session, because after the proposal, that's exactly what happens.
If you need an idea, how about popping the question on a yacht that sails around the Hudson River? I have more information for you here!
Why Should I Hire a Proposal Photographer?
Ask any of your engaged friends the same question you always ask: "How did they propose?" Nobody ever says "I don't remember" when the answer was planned. But plenty of people say they were so surprised, so overwhelmed, so focused on the ring and the person in front of them that they genuinely don't remember what happened next. The crowd that was watching. The way the light hit. The expression on their face before they even processed what was happening.
That's what I capture. Not just the knee-on-ground moment... the whole arc. The anticipation before. The shock during. The joy after. And then a full portrait session where you're already glowing, already engaged, already the best versions of yourselves.
Most of my clients look at their proposal photos and say they didn't realize how good the session was until they saw the reveal. It becomes their engagement session. It becomes their story.
Behind the Scenes of an Actual Proposal
Popular NJ Proposal Locations I Love
I photograph proposals all over New Jersey and know these locations well. Not sure where to propose? Tell ME what you're envisioning... the vibe, the backdrop, the time of day, and we'll help you find the right spot.
Van Vleck House & Gardens, Montclair — An absolutely stunning property with formal gardens, hidden corners, and gorgeous natural light. Perfect for a romantic, garden-style proposal with privacy.
South Mountain Reservation, Essex County — Wooded trails, waterfall overlooks, and dramatic elevation changes. Great for couples who love nature and want something that feels earned.
Liberty State Park, Jersey City — Iconic NYC skyline backdrop without getting on a boat. Works beautifully at sunset with the right lighting setup.
Duke Farms, Hillsborough — Expansive grounds, incredible architecture, and multiple distinct settings within one property. One of New Jersey's most underrated proposal locations.
Verona Park, Verona — Classic, accessible, and genuinely beautiful in every season. Great for a more intimate proposal with a natural, relaxed feel.
Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton — If your partner is into art, design, or just wants something genuinely unlike anywhere else, this is it. Dramatic sculptural settings with incredible photographic potential.
Morristown Green / Downtown Morristown — Historic, accessible, and vibrant. Works well for proposals that include a dinner celebration right after.
Asbury Park Boardwalk / Beach — Coastal proposals with an artistic, eclectic backdrop. Gorgeous at golden hour. A strong choice for couples who met at the Shore or just love the ocean.
Princeton University Campus — Architectural grandeur, lush grounds, and a timeless feel. A proposal here photographs beautifully in any season.
Private residences, rooftops, restaurants — We do those too. Sometimes the most meaningful location is the one with personal significance, and we'll make it look incredible regardless of where it is.
Preparing for a Surprise Proposal
Preparing for a surprise proposal has a lot of moving parts. We're here to help you through to process and maybe take a few worries off your shoulder too. Depending on where you will be proposing, we will discuss clothing, hair, makeup, and all the possible things you may need leading up to your engagement and the moments after. We want to make sure you feel great and look your best for your proposal photos. Some people had special plans after. For instance, when we're shooting proposals on yachts overlooking the NYC Skyline in Jersey City, many couples go to dinner at The Liberty House, or at one of the other great restaurants nearby in Downtown Jersey City. What if you're proposing in Montclair, or getting engaged in Asbury Park? We capture marriage proposals in New Jersey and NYC, so Tri-State locations are not an issue!
