5 Things You Need to Know Before Choosing Your Family Photographer

When choosing a photographer, you want one who takes beautiful, intimate, fun photographs. You also want to choose a photographer you can grow with. Photography sessions aren’t typically one and done. You’ll want to have a go-to photographer for important moments in life like expecting a child, birthdays, graduations, weddings, and even annual photo sessions. You'll want to document the growth and accomplishments of you, your children, and maybe even your parents. These photographs become part of your life. They're something you’ll look back on for years to come. They’ll act as a reminder of how special these moments were and still are, so you’ll want to go with a photographer you can trust. One that your kids grow familiar with.

As you research potential photographers and photography companies, you will find that there are a lot of options and variations. Not only in style and pricing, but in product offerings, personalities, and other details. Large photography companies often have multiple photographers working for them. This means that they may not offer the personal touch you prefer. That’s why a smaller local boutique photography studio is often the best choice—and is also well worth the investment.

1. A photographer you can develop a relationship with

When it comes to professional family photos, you want to choose a photographer you and your family can develop a relationship with. Having a photographer your kids are familiar and comfortable with will not only make your life easier, but it will also reflect in your photographs. The enjoyment you and your children have during your photo session will shine through in your photographs. In return, a photographer who knows your family will be able to accomplish a lot more than a photographer who doesn’t.

2. Think about the experience

Your experience before, after, and during your photo session will make or break a long-term relationship between you and your photographer. Make sure you learn about their process. Do they offer wall art options or albums, or do they just offer digital files? What’s the quality like of their photographs? Do you feel guided through the process so far or left to figure things out on your own? How do your kids feel after the session? Did they have fun? Know that nowadays, websites reveal a lot about a photography company, but not everything. Asking questions and having a phone call, video chat, or in-person meeting prior to booking is important. Then you can determine with confidence whether or not how they do business is a good fit for you and your family.

3. Know what you’re getting

Nobody likes to be caught off guard, especially when you’re putting money into something that turns out to be something else. You’ll want to know that what your photographer offers is what you want, and what you'll get. Figure out if you like the style of photographs they show. Will you get to choose that specific photographer if it’s a larger company? Will you want something tangible to have in your home? If you are looking for luxury wall art but you’re considering a photographer who only delivers digital files, that might not work out. Your photographs might not be large enough and clear enough for the wall art you’re interested in or for the location you want to hang it. On the other hand, you may just want digital files. It's all up to you and what you want.

4. Consider photographs you can display

Nowadays we have cellphones and computers full of photographs we hardly look at. Occasionally, we’ll take a deep dive into our phones with our chins tucked into our chests as we scroll. Occasionally, we’ll print some of them. Photographs evoke emotion and memories. When they’re of your family, those photographs radiate love and happiness. They can also boost your child's self-esteem and help them to develop a sense of belonging (see our linked article below to learn more). When choosing a photographer, find out what products they offer.

5. You deserve that personal touch

Chances are you prefer a local salon to a chain experience because of the difference in service and the relationship you have with your stylist. The same goes for choosing a photographer. You want your images taken and edited with skill, but someone who has spent time speaking with you and knows just what moments are most important to you will go into both the photography and editing process with your desires and needs in mind.
